Thompson Solutions Group Donates Industrial Robot to Northeast Community College

Robotic training system will provide students with hands-on experience in automation, robotics, and advanced manufacturing applications.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Thompson Solutions Group (TSG) has donated a Yaskawa Motoman GP-8 industrial robot and training system to Northeast Community College, supporting the college’s commitment to workforce development and expanding hands-on learning opportunities for students in automation and advanced manufacturing.

The donated robot, previously used by Thompson Solutions Group’s Automation team for internal application testing and demonstrations, will become part of Northeast Community College’s new iHub innovation space. Along with the robotic arm, TSG provided accessories that will allow students to explore and demonstrate common industrial automation applications, including pick-and-place operations and palletizing.

The donation reflects a shared commitment between industry and education to prepare the next generation of skilled workers with experience of the technologies used in today’s manufacturing environments.

“We are excited to support Northeast Community College and its efforts to provide students with real-world exposure to industrial automation,” said Blair Harp, Vice President of Building Systems at Thompson Solutions Group. “Today’s manufacturers are increasingly relying on robotics and automation to improve productivity, quality, and safety. By putting this technology directly into the hands of students, we’re helping build the workforce that will drive innovation and growth across our region.”

The Yaskawa robot will be integrated into the college’s iHub, where students will gain practical experience programming and operating industrial automation equipment while learning the principles behind modern manufacturing systems.

“Thompson Solutions Group’s investment in the iHub reflects what’s possible when education and industry work together,” said Erin Sharpe, Director of the iHub at Northeast Community College. “The Yaskawa robot cart gives students hands-on experience with technology they’ll encounter in today’s manufacturing environment, helping us prepare a skilled workforce while creating lasting value for our students, our industry partners, and our region.”

As a long-time advocate for technical education and workforce development, Thompson Solutions Group believes partnerships with educational institutions are essential to meeting the growing demand for skilled professionals in automation, engineering, construction, and manufacturing.

“This donation represents more than equipment. It’s an investment in students, educators, and the future workforce that will help our industries continue to grow and succeed,” said Renee Beaulieu, CEO of Thompson Solutions Group. “We are proud to partner with Northeast Community College in creating opportunities that benefit the entire region.”

The donation aligns with Thompson Solutions Group’s ongoing efforts to support STEM education, technical training, and workforce development initiatives throughout the Midwest.
