How Secure is Your Information?

Internet privacy is becoming more and more important as the digital age continues to grow. Threats are becoming smarter and are finding new ways to hack in and steal your information. Staying up to date on the latest threats or using better practices can help reduce your risk.  Below are a few simple things you can do help keep your personal information safe.

Two-Factor Authentication

The addition of a second factor is another layer of protection when signing in to something rather than just a password. This could include a security question that only you know the answer to, a key fob or key card to get into a certain area or having a pin number on hand when accessing something of importance.

Password Complexity

Gone are the days of using the name of your favorite pet or a birthday as a password.  Strong passwords should include a unique combination of letters, numbers, and symbols with both uppercase and lowercase letters.  It is also recommended that passwords be a minimum of 8 characters and be changed every 180 days.  This type of password complexity makes it much more difficult for a hacker and their tools to try and steal your information.

Password Management

Given the vast number of accounts, a person may have, remembering multiple logins and passwords is a challenge for everyone.  This leads to people using the same password across multiple sites or accounts. Password duplication can make it very easy for a hacker to access all of your accounts at the same time. Today there are several applications that will allow you to remember just one Master Password and assist you in creating unique passwords for each site you need login access for.  Examples of these applications would be LastPass, RoboForm and Dashlane.
